That changed with a remarkable discovery at the ancient city of Xultun in northeastern Guatemala, where archaeologists identified what is now believed to be the earliest named Maya astronomer and mathematician: Sak Tahn Waax, whose name translates as “White-chested Fox.”

Sak Tahn Waax worked during the eighth century CE, centuries before the surviving Dresden Codex was created. His writings demonstrate that the sophisticated astronomical knowledge preserved in the codices was already flourishing within Maya scholarly communities. Rather than isolated observations, his calculations reveal an organized scientific tradition built upon generations of careful record-keeping and mathematical refinement.
Among his greatest contributions was the integration of several celestial cycles into a unified mathematical framework. His calculations combine the 260-day Tzolk’in sacred calendar, the 365-day Haab solar year, and the synodic periods of both Venus and Mars. Before this discovery, the remarkable astronomical tables of the Dresden Codex were anonymous achievements. Now we know that behind these accomplishments stood real individuals—scholars who devoted their lives to observing the heavens, refining mathematical models, and preserving knowledge through written calculation.
The discovery also strengthens the growing recognition that Maya astronomy was one of the world’s great scientific traditions. Their work was not limited to ritual observance or simple calendrical bookkeeping. Although many questions remain about Sak Tahn Waax’s life, his writings have already secured his place in history. More than twelve centuries after he carefully recorded his calculations on the plaster walls of Xultun, the “White-chested Fox” has emerged from obscurity as the earliest known Maya astronomer whose name—and scientific legacy—we can finally recognize.
